The Tamil Nadu Online gaming Authority has implemented new regulations requiring real-money gaming platforms in Tamil Nadu to ban logins between midnight and five in the morning. The action, which adds to the industry's mounting regulatory obstacles, attempts to protect children and stop excessive gaming behavior.

The new regulations' salient features include:

Required "blank hours": RMG platforms are required to impose a blackout time that prohibits players from accessing games between midnight and five in the morning.

Improved user protection: Platforms must now show pop-up alerts regarding the addictive nature of online gaming, let users establish daily, weekly, and monthly spending caps, and openly show their spending history. After an hour of playtime, there will also be repeated warnings every half an hour.

Strict authentication and KYC: At account creation, Know Your Customer (KYC) verification has become required, requiring both OTP verification and Aadhaar-based identification.

In August 2023, the five-member Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority was established, with retired IAS officer Md. Nasimuddin serving as its chair. It has the authority to register users, monitor regional internet gaming companies, and identify games of chance that the state may decide to outlaw.

The gaming sector in India is still thriving. Real-money gaming led the industry in revenue, which reached an astounding $3.80 billion in FY24, up 22.6% from $3.10 billion in FY23, according to a recent Lumikai analysis. According to the analysis, this amount might increase at a 20% CAGR over the following five years, reaching $9.20 billion by FY29.
